The lining of the digestive tract is our first line of immune defense. The mucous membranes that line our intestines are designed to absorb nutrients and also to act as a selective filter to reject poisonous substances and waste.
When the intestinal membranes are overloaded with stagnant, toxic material, they become irritated and inflamed. Inflammation in the intestines decreases their filtering ability which leads to increased absorption of toxic materials in the liver, blood and lymph systems. This “gut leakage” contributes to a series of negative reactions that adversely affect every system of the body.
By removing toxins, colon cleansing relieves stagnation and helps to decrease gut permeability - making it a valuable therapy to begin, support or enhance any healing program.

What is a colonic?
|
A colonic (also known as Colon Hydrotherapy) is an internal bath, a flow of filtered water into and out of the large intestine to safely detox the poisons or impurities from your system. I use a “Woods Method” gravity flow closed system which is gentler than hydraulic pressure colonics.
The intestinal cleaning procedure takes place in a relaxing, nurturing environment. The colonic starts with you reclining on the colonic table. A sterile, disposable speculum is lubricated and gently inserted into the rectum. An in-flow tube brings clean, filtered, temperature-controlled water in through the speculum; a second, out-flow tube carries out waste. In addition, I use abdominal massage, acupressure points and Bach flower remedies to further stimulate the release of toxins from your body, thus motivating your entire being to balance and enhance the healing process. Each colonic may also include nutritional suggestions, a recommendation for trace mineral replacement, and the option of an infusion of high quality probiotics to replenish healthy bacteria into the gut. Probiotics are beneficial as both an immune booster and preventative health plan. |
How long does the colonic take? |
The colonic takes approximately one hour, however allow an hour and a half for your appointment. Your first visit might take longer, as we will discuss your goals and needs during this time.
|
Does the water go into the small intestine? |
No, the water cleanses the large intestine and does not enter the small intestine.
|
What is a Gravity Flow System? |
A Gravity Flow System uses water flowing, or falling, by gravity rather than being pushed by a hydraulic pressure system. With gravity flow, the water enters the body gently; the natural ebb and flow of water is used for intake and release during the colonic session. This also allows the body to do its own work in pushing out waste material and water, thus strengthening peristalsis. For these reasons, I prefer the “Wood Method” gravity flow closed system rather than a pressure-operated system.
|
What is a Closed System? |
In a closed system, the water flows into the body through one of two tubes connected to the speculum, while waste is released through the other tube. This means that all waste being released is enclosed, yet is visible to the therapist for observation and evaluation.
